Canada Extends Temporary Resident Access for Ukrainian Family Reunification Applicants

Canada Extends Temporary Resident Access for Ukrainian Family Reunification Applicants

The Government of Canada has announced new measures to support Ukrainian nationals and their family members who have applied for permanent residence through the family reunification pathway. These measures provide stability and legal status to applicants while they await a final decision on their permanent residence (PR) applications.

Extended Access to Permits

Eligible individuals now have until March 31, 2027, to apply for the following from within Canada:

  • Open Work Permits: New applications or extensions of existing permits.

  • Study Permits: New applications for those pursuing education.

  • Temporary Resident Status: Extensions or restoration of status for those whose legal stay is expiring.

Important Policy Updates

A critical feature of this announcement is the flexibility regarding documentation. Applicants can apply for these temporary documents even if they have not yet received an acknowledgement of receipt (AOR) for their permanent residence application.

This ensures that processing delays in PR files do not cause applicants to lose their legal ability to work, study, or remain in Canada.

Fees and Compliance

While these measures streamline the extension process, they are not fee-exempt. Standard IRCC application fees will apply to all work, study, and status extension requests
